Chris Massam
My years at secondary school were the most crucial in my pursuit of a career in sport. Indeed, the experience I gained from sport, and the quality of the teaching, left me with a passion and desire to share this knowledge with others. On leaving secondary school, I attended Sutton Coldfield College, undertaking a National Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science and my FA Level 1football coaching qualification. This enabled me to commence part-time employment with Birmingham City Football Club as a Community Coach.
My Diploma gave me the knowledge to understand and interpret sport at a maturer level, through modules such as anatomy and physiology, sports coaching, sports massage, exercise health and lifestyle and sports nutrition. I furthered my education by undertaking a BSC Honors in Sport and Exercise Science which enabled me to build upon the knowledge I had already acquired and put theory into practice. Upon graduating, opportunities presented themselves to work and make a difference in an industry that I feel most passionate about.
Having been employed by Birmingham City Football Club from the age of sixteen, gaining a number of football coaching qualifications and developing my coaching skills under the direction of some influential and innovative coaches, I was awarded a full-time position and a responsibility for developing inclusive activities through the Community Trust Department at the Football Club. This involved organising lunch time and after school sessions, managing staff and leading healthy lifestyle workshops. My development led to becoming a fully qualified lecturer at Birmingham City College within their football education programme.
I have chosen to represent Multi-ACTIVE as I am passionate about all children accessing and developing through high-quality multi-sports programmes. These programmes, delivered by highly-qualified coaches, are designed to enable every child to maximise their potential in sport and pursue healthy lifestyles, now and in the future.
